Traveller's Check List
What you should know before you leave home...
Read up on your destination and its laws, customs and climate. Obtain appropriate clothes and learn some useful phrases.
Think about your personal safety on your trip. Check the department's website at http://www.dfat.gov.au/ to see if there is a travel advice current for any of the countries you plan to visit. Check with your insurance company to see if there are insurance implications.
See your doctor or travel health centre. Get your vaccinations and a plan to stay healthy. (Note that the necessary vaccinations can take three or even six months.)
If you already have a passport, make sure it is valid for at least six months beyond your total trip duration. If you are travelling with family or in a party, check everyone's passport.
If you need a new passport, apply early, it can take up to 8 weeks to have it issued.
If you use a wheelchair or have other special needs, check the facilities of the places where you want to go.
Book your ticket and obtain appropriate travel insurance from your travel agent. Make sure the name on your ticket matches that on your passport.
Find out what visas you need and obtain them. Your travel agent will assist.
Arrange for medication, prescriptions or glasses and a doctor's letter if necessary.
If in doubt, check that your medications are legal where you intend to visit.
Double-check that you have adequate health and travel insurance. Be aware that a pre-existing medical condition could void that insurance.
If you are receiving a payment through Centrelink, inform them of your trip.
Write or update your will.
Arrange for someone to look after your house, pets, pot plants and mail.
Get adaptor plugs for electrical equipment you plan to take.
While you are thinking about shopping overseas, ask your travel agent for relevant brochures.
Get a "tax back for travellers" brochure from Customs.
Obtain your travel money - cash card or credit card, foreign cash and phone card.
Photocopy your credit cards, itinerary, passport, phone card. Leave one copy with family and carry another copy separately in your luggage.
If you are staying in a country for more than twelve months or have specific security concerns, register your details online at http://www.orao.dfat.gov.au/.
